Helping to Put Safety First – For Free

An annual health and safety awareness day is being staged again in Stoke-on-Trent to give workers within the construction sector a wealth of advice – for free.

The Safety Health Awareness Day (SHAD) is aimed at smaller firms – from sole traders up to those with 15 employees – in the Staffordshire and South Cheshire area.

Now in its fourth year, the event is taking place at The Britannia Stadium on Thursday, September 27. Running over a full day, it will include lunch and refreshments.

Featuring demonstrations and workshops by leading experts in the health and safety field, the event aims to raise awareness of key health and safety issues facing the construction industry and give practical advice on how to minimise risk on construction sites.

Part of the Working Well Together campaign, it is just one of a series of events run by the industry, for the industry, throughout the UK.

Firms offering support and expertise to the programme include Seddon, Redrow, Persimmon, Speedy and Laing O’Rourke, as well as Stoke-on-Trent City Council, the North Staffordshire Health and Safety Group and the Health and Safety Executive. They are all bringing their own experience of health and safety to share with delegates on the day.

Chris Comerford, of Seddon, which has lent its support to the event since its launch in 2004, said: “SHAD provides a great opportunity to work together, share best practice and learn how to make the industry in this area safer.”

In previous years more than 300 people attended the event and this year the organisers hope to attract an even bigger audience.

Trevor Fletcher, Company Secretary of the North Staffordshire Health and Safety Group, said: “This event brings together a wealth of information on topics including worker engagement, noise and power tools, scaffolding, scaffold towers, podiums and ladders - as well asbestos, transport and plant.

“Generally speaking smaller firms can often struggle to access such a range of training on health and safety, but this event brings it all together in a convenient format.

“The aim is not only to raise awareness of key health and safety issues facing the construction industry, but also to give practical advice on how to avoid risks on construction sites.

“It’s a great opportunity to get all this advice, support and guidance for free. The event is popular, so we would urge people to get in touch as soon as they can to book their place.”

As well running SHAD, the North Staffordshire Health and Safety Group is also holding a Designer Awareness Day, which will run concurrently on September 27. Taking place in the afternoon, the event is aimed at architects and costs £50 to attend.

To book places on the day and for further information contact Cheryl Eeles on 0121 607 6293. People going to the events will receive a certificate of attendance.
