Seddon Paints A Picture of the Workplace For Youngsters
Youngsters were given the chance to test their skills at painting and decorating as part of an initiative that gives students the chance to get hands-on experience in the workplace.
Seddon Painting joined forces with Stoke-on-Trent College to help 11 students experience life in a working environment.
The students joined workers from the company on site at the Express by Holiday Inn, at Trentham Lakes, Stoke-on-Trent.
Kay Brennan, School Links Development Officer at Stoke-on-Trent College, said that four of the students were doing a Young Apprenticeship in construction at the Cauldon campus and seven were on a BTEC entry level construction course.
She added: “This event offered the chance for our students to experience life in the workplace, which is extremely valuable.
“Seddon has also offered to provide work placements to a number of 14 to 16 year olds on our Young Apprentices programme and we greatly appreciate this support.
“The college has a very good relationship with Seddon and our new building technology centre has actually been named after John Seddon, retired chairman of the Seddon Group, who has been a member of the College Corporation for many years.”
The visit to the Express by Holiday Inn was part of the Connexions Stoke Challenge programme which provides funding for workplace visits by students.
Seddon have been employed to redecorate more than half of the bedrooms at the hotel.
Kevin Smith, training manager for Seddon Painting, said: “We were happy to build upon our partnership with the college and provide access for young people to experience a real, live working environment.
“We have been working on a complete redecoration contract for around 60 per cent of the bedrooms at the Express by Holiday Inn, so it was a good opportunity for the youngsters to see work in progress in a real situation and we are grateful to the hotel management for supporting the initiative.”
