Youngsters Net Football Benefits
Euro 2008 might have been a non-starter for the England team, but youngsters in Bristol were able to exercise their competitive spirit on the pitch.
Places for People organised a five-a-side tournament for youth organisations throughout Bristol.
The one day event was designed to foster community spirit among young people from across the city - and to show them the types of housing opportunities and skills training available to them.
Places for People own and manage 5,000 properties in the South West and is constantly seeking ways to enhance community cohesion among young people across Bristol.
Held at Brislington, the football tournament attracted teams from areas including St Pauls, the Dings, Barton Hill and Easton.
The work of youth agencies and training organisations such as the Prince’s Trust, was also showcased at the event, to encourage young people to take advantage of training opportunities.
A spokesperson from Places for People, said: “Nearly 100 young people from across the city came to the event, which was a huge success and enjoyed immensely by all, both winners and losers.
“An even bigger event is planned for next year to build upon the positive outcomes achieved this year.”
Event supporters included painting and maintenance company J & S Seddon, who scored with the young players by providing strips and a packed lunch.
In total, J & S Seddon - a major contractor for Places for People - provided football shirts for 126 players, along with the refreshments.
Mark Bishop of J & S Seddon Painting, which is based in Avonmouth, Bristol, said: “It was a great day involving many young people from across the city and we were happy to help.
“The benefits were obvious to see as people from different communities mixed together in a positive atmosphere.”
As well as the football tournament itself, information was made available to young people on how they can access housing for the under-25 age bracket and gladiator games and break dancing training sessions were also on offer.
