Seddon’s Training Excellence Recognised
Workers aged 16 to 60 joined Stoke-on-Trent South MP Rob Flello to celebrate the success of a unique industry training centre.
J & S Seddon’s training complex in Stoke-on-Trent is one of the first company-based centres in the UK to offer nationally-accredited NVQ training and assessment.
Located in Fenton, the centre achieved accreditation this March following a rigorous assessment process.
The national painting, maintenance and construction company invited Mr Flello, their local MP, to tour the centre and hand out awards to workers who were among the first to receive an NVQ.
Mr Flello presented Kevin Smith, the centre manager, with the centre’s accreditation certificate and congratulated a group of five workers on achieving Level Two NVQs.
The workers included Kevin Alcock, of Burton, and Desmond Blackburn, of Stoke, who are both in their 50s.
Mr Flello also met apprentice painter and decorator Craig Martin, a current finalist in the Painting and Decorating Association’s (PDA) Trainee of the Year competition and winner of the 2008 Johnstone’s Paints Young Painter of the Year prize.
Company apprentices also currently hold the 2008 PDA and Crown Trade Young Decorator of the Year titles.
Rob Flello MP said “I was delighted to meet such dedicated, hard-working people. The quality of the training was excellent and the attitude to life-long learning was very impressive.”
Stuart Seddon, chairman of J & S Seddon, which is part of the Seddon Group, said: “Training is offered to all our staff from the youngest apprentices to people with many years’ service. We also accommodate trainees from other companies.
“We are among the first companies in the UK to run this type of facility to achieve NVQ accreditation in construction skills.
“The company is committed to achieving a highly skilled workforce through its training programme, even in the current economic climate.”
J & S Seddon invested more than £1 million in its state-of-the-art training centre in 2007.
The facilities are used to support the company’s workforce across the UK.
Features of the centre include a technical suite and a training environment incorporating simulations of typical situations found in commercial, industrial and residential environments, to allow high level practical training to take place.
