JOHNSTONE’S YOUNG PAINTER OF THE YEAR REIGNS SUPREME!

The 5th annual Johnstone’s Painter of the Year competition reached its exciting climax at this year’s National Painting and Decorating Show with student painter and decorator Craig Martin of Seddon Property Services putting in a winning performance for the second consecutive year.

Tasked with completing a written theory exam and two days of painting at Johnstone’s dedicated stand, Craig managed to keep his head and his prestigious title after beating off strong competition from four other finalists. With two consecutive wins under his belt, the winner walked away with an array of prizes including a multimedia laptop, bag and colour photo printer as well as VIP tickets to both the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Final at Wembley and the Painter of the Year Awards. Craig also won a paint sprayer donated by Earlex to take back with him to Stoke on Trent College.

As the 2009 Johnstone’s Young Painter of the Year, Craig will now return to work for national painting contractor Seddon Property Services at their Stoke branch and continue his college training. York College student Warangu Sangthong, who is also combining his studies with an apprenticeship with J & S Seddon Ltd, finished in second place to win an iPod Touch.

Commenting on his success, Craig said: “I was competing against some great finalists this year and as the tasks were particularly challenging, I’m really pleased to have won the competition again. Johnstone’s Young Painter of the Year gives people the chance to demonstrate their skills and gain experience for the future and it looks great on a CV! Hopefully it will encourage more young people to get into the trade.”

Organised by leading paint manufacturer Johnstone’s, the Young Painter of the Year Awards aims to showcase young talent, reward best practice and encourage young people to enter the professional painting and decorating industry. After proving their creative talents at the regional heats throughout June and July, the five finalists were given a detailed specification to follow that had been devised by Johnstone’s technical training team and colour consultants to test the students’ painting and decorating skills in a number of key areas including preparation, application and ability to work from a written brief.

Each student had their own work station with wall panels, a door and doorframe, dado rail and skirting board and was evaluated on their accuracy, attention to detail and ability to apply different paint types.

Using a variety of water based products from Johnstone’s extensive product range to complete the practical tasks, the young painters were also given the opportunity to road test the new range of Fat Hog brushes.

Johnstone’s technical training manager Ken Hopkins, who judged the event alongside colleague Pete McParland adds: “What is particularly great about Johnstone’s Young Painter of the Year competition is that the finalists really do have to perform under pressure and completing such complex tasks in timed conditions and in full view of thousands of professionals at the Painting and Decorating Show is no easy feat. Now in its 5th year, the 2009 event has been the most successful to date and it’s great to see so much young talent out there. All the finalists should be extremely proud of their achievements.”

Entries for the 2010 Johnstone’s Young Painter of the Year competition are now being accepted and following a number of regional heats during April and May, the best of the best will once again come together for the national finale.

Entry forms are available from the Johnstone’s marketing department by emailing clare.winter@ppg.com or calling 01924 354783.
